Elbow Grease and a patient disposition are required for hand felting.
When the washing machine does all the work you have less control over how little or how much felting takes place.
I find boiled wool softer and less itchy than other types of felt.

You can see the stitches becoming more difficult to see and count. Repeating the process of Boiling in water, dunking in cold water and agitation, you continue until you piece is felted as you desire. Watch that water too, because it will boil over into a noisy soapy mess if you don't pay attention!

Remove as much water from the piece as possible. Shape your work how you like it & dry flat.

I wanted to make the stitches vanish, so I worked on this piece for almost 2 hours.

These photos were taken this morning, after the swatch dried.

The work is completely felted. The swatch started as a 7x7 inch square, to measuring 5 and a half by 6 inches...
